The Thanksgiving "turkey trot" is an annual tradition our real estate agents love – and we're not the only ones. Plenty of area families sign up for a turkey trot each year. It's a great way to earn that extra slice of pumpkin pie! Luckily, there are plenty of options across the Richmond area.

The turkey trot is the most popular racing trend in America. In 2015, Thanksgiving became the single busiest day of the whole year to run a race, finally unseating the Fourth of July. Believe it or not, the turkey trot tradition goes all the way back to 1896.

That's right – 1896!

The first turkey trot ever took place in Buffalo, New York and was hosted by the local YMCA. While there were only six participants in that original race, today's turkey trots attract hundreds!

• Colonial Heights Virginia Chamber of Commerce 2018 Turkey Trot – 3600 Conduit Road, Colonial Heights, VA 23834
  The Colonial Heights Turkey Trot will take you past some of the best Colonial Heights homes for sale as you get started in a brilliant new tradition. That's right: This is only the 2nd annual event, but the first had an astounding 1,100 participants. Each racer's registration will provide $5 to help local schools be the best they can be.

  Celebrate Thanksgiving Day with a remote run.  A remote run is not a traditional turkey trot, but physical activity is involved. It's a race without competition jitters, other runners, and a racing route that doesn't make sense.  You choose the distance--Half Marathon/10k/5k/1k/your own distance, and location--it doesn't have to be near one of our homes for sale in Richmond. I can be a local park, beach, stadium, gym, favorite place, treadmill--it's up to you. 
  
  
• SPC Turkey Waddle 5K Run & Walk – Salisbury Presbyterian Church, Midlothian, VA 23113
  An annual tradition, the SPC Turkey Waddle 5K Run & Walk is right in the neighborhood of top Midlothian homes for sale. Organized by the Salisbury Presbyterian Church, this run in the heart of Richmond takes place on Thanksgiving Day, November 22. It's fun for the whole family. Participants of all skill levels are invited to this truly enjoyable family get-together.
  
  
• Wegmans Turkey Trot 10K – University of Richmond - Tyler Haynes Commons, 28 Westhampton Way, Richmond, VA 23173
  The Wegmans Turkey Trot is one of the biggest events of its kind here in Virginia. Sponsored by one of the area's most beloved grocery stores, it has been running for 41 years now. It boasts a limit of 1,600 participants, which typically sells out every single year. In addition to the 10K road race, there's also a children's fun run – all within the lovely University of Richmond campus.
  
  
• West End Orthodontics Turkey Trot – Glen Allen Community Center, 10800 Brookley Rd, Glen Allen, VA 23060
  If you're looking for a way to help others in your community while having a unique racing experience, the West End Orthodontics Turkey Trot is for you. It benefits We Heart Harlie and Friends, a nonprofit dedicated to helping families of children with extensive medical needs meet their financial obligations and maintain treatment. The event takes the form of a 4-mile Turkey Trot through the West End, the first local trot of its kind to be chip-timed. Participants will engage in two loops of the 2-mile course before completion.
