A 54-acre island surrounded by the James River, Belle Isle is owned by the city of Richmond and maintained as a city park. Perhaps the most scenic fishing spot on the James, the island is crisscrossed by hiking trails and offers a spectacular view of the city skyline. Belle Isle is a popular spot for hikers and cyclists as well as fishers, who often paddle around the island by kayak, casting for bass around its rocky shoreline.

A popular James River access site in the community of Midlothian, Robious Landing Park provides plenty of bank access for shore fishing, as well as launch facilities for fishing boats. This section of the James River is known for excellent smallmouth bass fishing, along with catfish and bluegill. Overhanging sycamores along the shore provide cover for fish, and it's not uncommon to see eagles and ospreys circling overhead.
